Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1838/39 (AH 1254), Hacı Bekir Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1856/57, at about 18, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1866/67, to 1904/05, every annual entry places Bekir in the same office, correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace. A career like this is rare; no other of the 171 officials whose entries span 40 years or more kept one title in one place throughout. Entries spanning 40 years are rare, reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1866/67 to 1,200 in 1895/96, the peak, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 990 kuruş. In all, 40 years of salary come to 411,492 kuruş, 1.6 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
