Life#
Born in Zlatograd (Darıdere) in 1838/39 (AH 1254), Hayrullah Ağa came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). Hayrullah had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 28, in 1866/67, Hayrullah began work in Komotini (Gümülcine), paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1866/67, with Hayrullah as a sergeant (Çavuş) in Komotini, where the entries run to 1869/70. From 1871 to 1882 every annual entry places Hayrullah in Serres (Siroz).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1866/67, as Çavuş in Komotini, when one in ten paid officials earned less. Over 16 years pay ended below where it began, 285 kuruş against 300; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low.
