Life#
Halil Arif Efendi was born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1855/56 (AH 1272) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a steward (kethüda). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1871/72, Halil Arif began work in Kozani (Kozana), paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1871/72, places Halil Arif in Kozan as a sergeant (Çavuş), where the entries run to 1882/83. The annual lists then follow Halil Arif to seven places in 11 years, from Servia (Serfiçe) to Lecko, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1885/86, then Polygyros (Poliroz) from 1894 to 1906. The last post was in Thessaloniki again in 1906/07. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to 500 in 1885/86, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Thessaloniki, when 42 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 35 years the salaries add up to 151,920 kuruş, 70 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
