Life#
Born in Ioannina (Yanya) in 1865/66 (AH 1282) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Galip Efendi was the child of a clerk (katip). Mehmet Galip had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote Greek (Rum) as well as Turkish.
Work began in Grevena (Grebene) in 1882/83, at about 17, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1887/88, with Mehmet Galip as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Thessaloniki (Selanik), where the entries run to 1910/11. The last post was in Uzunköprü (Cisr-i Ergene) in 1911.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to a peak of 600 in 1908/09, as Muhabere Memuru in Thessaloniki, when 68 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 25 years the salaries add up to 120,000 kuruş, 83 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1911.
