Life#
Born in Kosova in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mustafa Nuri Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Mustafa Nuri also wrote Turkish and spoke Bulgarian.
Work began in Mount Athos (Aynaroz) in 1889/90, at about 21, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1889/90, with Mustafa Nuri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Mount Athos. Mustafa Nuri then moved to Kavadarci (Kavadar) and Štip (İştip) from 1890 to 1896, then Radoviste from 1896 to 1903. Next came Bihcova from 1903 to 1909. The last posts were in Radoviste in 1909/10 and Rahovec (Rahofça) in 1910/11.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 500 in 1910/11, as 3. Müdür in Rahovec, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 22 years of salary come to 52,824 kuruş, 42 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1910/11.
