Life#
Born in Malatya in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hüseyin Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Hüseyin had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 25, in 1893/94, Hüseyin began work in Malatya, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Hüseyin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Tarsus. Hüseyin then moved to Adana and Pozantı from 1895 to 1900. The last posts were in Adana again from 1900 to 1907, first as a postal official (Posta Memuru), from 1906/07 as Muhabere Memuru.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 500 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Adana, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07. An entry in "Sicill-i ahval defterlerine göre Malatya doğumlu memurlar: 1879-1909" by RAMAZAN ÇELEM (2014) probably refers to Hüseyin, since the name and the birthplace agree.
