Life#
Halit Şahabettin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1876/77, at about 14, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1878/79, with Halit Şahabettin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1882/83. Next came Aleppo (Halep) from 1883 to 1892, then Silifke from 1892 to 1896. Halit Şahabettin then moved to Adana from 1896 to 1906. The last post was in Mersin in 1906/07.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to a peak of 600 in 1887/88, as Muhabere Memuru in Aleppo, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 29 years of salary come to 166,740 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
