Life#
Mustafa Remzi Efendi was born in Tarsus in 1863/64 (AH 1280) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). At about 23, in 1886/87, Mustafa Remzi began work in Tarsus, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1893/94, with Mustafa Remzi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Adana, where the entries run to 1901/02. The last post was in Taşucu in 1903/04.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to 440 in 1896/97, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Adana, when 44 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04. Mustafa Remzi probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl defterlerine göre Tarsus doğumlu memurlar" by MUSTAFA TURŞUCU (2025) (the name, the birthplace and the birth year agree).
