Life#
Osman Edip Efendi was born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1869/70 (AH 1286) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an imam. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Osman Edip began work in Istanbul in 1891/92, at about 22, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places Osman Edip in Adana as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Pristina (Priştine) from 1894 to 1898 and Thessaloniki, the birthplace, in 1898/99.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 675 in 1898/99, as Posta Memuru in Thessaloniki, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1898/99; the list of 1899/1900 (AH 1317) gives the status word Vefat (death).
