Life#
Born in Skopje (Üsküp) in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mustafa İlhami Efendi was the child of a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Mustafa İlhami had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 15, in 1888/89, Mustafa İlhami began work in Kumanovo (Kumanova), with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places Mustafa İlhami in Nablus as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Mustafa İlhami to Pristina (Priştine) and Didymoteicho (Dimetoka) from 1895 to 1899, then Ardos from 1899 to 1907. The last post was in Aydın in 1907/08.
The salary went from 285 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 500 in 1907/08, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Aydın, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1907/08. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Kayıtlarına göre Üsküp doğumlu memurlar" by HALENUR DİLOĞLU (2021) probably refers to Mustafa İlhami, since the name and the birthplace agree.
