Life#
Mehmet Hifzi Efendi was born in Niğde in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Agavattan". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Hifzi also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Mehmet Hifzi began work in Niğde in 1891/92, at about 17, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 280 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places Mehmet Hifzi in Nablus as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1899/1900. The last posts were in Beirut (Beyrut) from 1900 to 1907.
Pay rose from 280 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 340 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Beirut, when 35 per cent of paid officials earned less.
