Life#
Born in Niğde in 1869/70 (AH 1286), Ali Rıza Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Ali Rıza had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1883/84, Ali Rıza began work in Niğde, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1891/92, with Ali Rıza as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Sjenica (Seniçe). Ali Rıza then moved to Prijepolje (Prepol) from 1893 to 1904, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). The last post was in Şereflikoçhisar (Koçhisar) in 1904/05.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 570 in 1893/94, as 3. Müdür in Prijepolje, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 14 years pay ended below where it began, 400 kuruş against 500. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
