Life#
Born in Niğde in 1864/65 (AH 1281) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hasan Tahsin Efendi was the child of a sergeant (çavuş). Hasan Tahsin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Niğde in 1886/87, at about 22, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Hasan Tahsin in Payas as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür), where the entries run to 1894/95. The last posts were in Şereflikoçhisar (Koçhisar) and Ilgın from 1895 to 1901 and Ermenek in 1901/02.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 540 in 1901/02, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Ermenek, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1901/02.
