Life#
Mehmet Hamdi Efendi was born in Isparta in 1865/66 (AH 1282), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Hamdi also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 14, in 1878/79, Mehmet Hamdi began work in Isparta, with 11 unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, 31 worked unpaid for 11 years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1889/90, with Mehmet Hamdi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Burdur, where the entries run to 1893/94. The last posts were in Yalvaç from 1894 to 1896 and Ilgın from 1896 to 1898, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1894/95.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 500 in 1894/95, as 3. Müdür in Yalvaç, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1897/98.
