Life#
Abdurrahman Faik Efendi was born in Tirana (Tiran) in 1865/66 (AH 1282), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "kasap". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Tirana in 1878, at about 13, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 190 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1881/82, with Abdurrahman Faik as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Berat. The last posts were in Shkodër (İşkodra) from 1883 to 1886.
The salary went from 190 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to 300 in 1883/84, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Shkodër, when 12 per cent of paid officials earned less.
