Life

Born in Tirana (Tiran) in 1858/59 (AH 1275), Edhem Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Edhem had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote Arabic, Persian and Turkish.

At about 18, in 1877/78, Edhem began work in Tirana, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 475 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1880/81 and 1881/82, place Edhem in Akçakoca (Akçaşehir) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 475 kuruş a month in 1880/81, as Muhabere Memuru in Akçakoca, when 43 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1881/82.
