Life#
Corci Asaf Efendi was born in Haifa (Hayfa) in 1858/59 (AH 1275), into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi); Corci Asaf also wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of Arabic and French.
Corci Asaf began work in Haifa in 1877/78, at about 18, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 280 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1880/81, with Corci Asaf as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Gaza (Gazze). Next came Jeddah (Cidde) from 1883 to 1888, then Suakin in 1888/89, as a director (Müdür), and Kumanovo in 1889/90. The annual lists then follow Corci Asaf to Rhodes (Rodos) from 1890 to 1896. From 1896 to 1909 every annual entry places Corci Asaf in Istanbul, first as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti, from 1903/04 as a chief official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru). Few officials served on three continents (Africa, Asia and Europe); fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 280 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to 1,600 in 1888/89, the peak, as Müdür in Suakin, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
