Life#
Yanko Efendi was born in Edirne in 1859/60 (AH 1276), into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi); Yanko also wrote French and Greek (Rum) and spoke Turkish.
Yanko began work in Edirne in 1879/80, at about 20, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1881/82, places Yanko in Keşan as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1895/96. The lists have no entry for 1884 to 1887. Next came a return to Edirne, the birthplace, from 1896 to 1901. The last posts were in Keşan again from 1901 to 1903. Fewer than 10 per cent of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title throughout.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to a peak of 400 in 1883/84, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Keşan, when 27 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
