Life#
Born in 1859/60 (AH 1276) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community, Dimitri Nikolaki Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a special school (Mekteb-i Mahsusa); Dimitri Nikolaki also wrote French as well as Turkish.
At about 22, in 1881/82, Dimitri Nikolaki began work in Trabya, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1886/87, with Dimitri Nikolaki as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Keşan, where the entries run to 1891/92. Next came Edirne from 1892 to 1904. The last post was in Tekirdağ in 1904/05.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1886/87 to a peak of 500 in 1904/05, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Tekirdağ, when 52 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
