Life#
Selim Efendi was born in Lubnan in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Maronite Christian (Maruni) community. Schooling took four years, at a special school (Mekteb-i Mahsusa); Selim also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Selim began work in Pezun in 1877/78, at about 16, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places Selim in Damascus (Şam) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1888/89. The annual lists then follow Selim to Latakia (Lazkiye) and Nasiriyah (Nasıriye) from 1889 to 1893, then Pezun from 1893 to 1902, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1894/95. The last posts were in Beirut (Beyrut) from 1902 to 1904.
The salary went from 285 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to 600 in 1894/95, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Pezun, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
