Life#
Born in Homs (Humus), Mehmet Muhyiddin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a sheikh (şeyh). The records give birth years from 1846 to 1875 (AH 1263 to 1291). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Humus in 1868/69 (AH 1285), with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1869/70, with Mehmet Muhyiddin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Homs, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1875/76. Next came Latakia (Lazkiye), Hama, Mezraa, Damascus (Şam) and Acre (Akka), five places in 16 years. From 1891 to 1896 the annual entries place Mehmet Muhyiddin again in Damascus.
