Life#
Ahmet Hilmi Efendi was born in Konya in 1830/31 (AH 1246) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Ahmet Hilmi began work in Istanbul in 1859/60, at about 29, with ten unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 2 per cent worked unpaid for ten years or longer. From the first annual entry, for 1869/70, to 1895/96, every annual entry places Ahmet Hilmi in the same post, machine official (Makine Memuru), in Konya, the birthplace. Of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more, 41 kept one title in one place throughout.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to a peak of 500 in 1876/77, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 28 years of salary come to 162,300 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years.
