Life#
Dimitri Servet Efendi was born in Konya in 1854/55 (AH 1271), into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Dimitri Servet also wrote Greek (Rum) as well as Turkish.
Dimitri Servet began work in Konya in 1873/74, at about 18, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1875/76, places Dimitri Servet in Adana as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Antalya and Ilgın from 1876 to 1880, then Manavgat from 1880 to 1892. Dimitri Servet then moved to Metsovo (Meçova), Korçë (Görice), Izmir (İzmir) and Mytilene (Midilli), four places in 11 years, then back to Konya, the birthplace, from 1903 to 1906. The last post was in Manavgat again in 1906/07. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 500 in 1892/93, as Muhabere Memuru in Metsovo, when 44 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 33 years pay ended where it began, at 380 kuruş; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
