Life#
Born in Konya in 1859/60 (AH 1276), Lazari John Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Lazari John had four years of schooling, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi).
At about 17, in 1877/78, Lazari John began work in Konya, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1877/78, places Lazari John in Konya, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1887/88. The annual lists then follow Lazari John to Akşehir in 1888/89. From 1889 to 1904 the annual entries place Lazari John again in Konya, first in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti), from 1898/99 in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi). The lists have no entry for 1895 to 1898.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to a peak of 600 in 1889/90, in the Başmüdür Kitabeti in Konya, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less.
