Life#
Born in Konya in 1848/49 (AH 1265) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Tevfik Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Mehmet Tevfik began work in Konya in 1865/66, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1867/68, places Mehmet Tevfik in Şereflikoçhisar (Koçhisar) as Kantar Memuru. For 1869 to 1876 the lists have no entry. Next came a return to Konya, the birthplace, from 1876 to 1884, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru), then Karaağaç in 1884/85. The last posts were in Konya again from 1885 to 1893.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to 500 in 1884/85, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Karaağaç, when 42 per cent of paid officials earned less.
