Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1848/49 (AH 1265), Ali Nafiz Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an official (memur). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 19, in 1868/69, Ali Nafiz began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Sinop, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1868/69, places Ali Nafiz in Sinop as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Bursa in 1870/71. From 1872 to 1906 every annual entry places Ali Nafiz in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as Duhan Memuru, from 1888/89 in the Gumruk Kitabeti. The lists have no entry for 1883 to 1888. Entries spanning 39 years are rare, reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 750 in 1872/73, the peak, as Duhan Memuru in Istanbul, when 63 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 700 kuruş. In all, 31 years of salary come to 182,280 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
