Life#
Cafer Sadık Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1848/49 (AH 1265) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Cafer Sadık also attended the telegraph school and wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
At about 20, in 1869/70, Cafer Sadık began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1872/73, places Cafer Sadık in Damascus (Şam) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1877/78. Cafer Sadık then moved to Vadiyul acem in 1878, then back to Damascus from 1878 to 1895, with a rise to assistant director (Müdür Muavini) in 1894/95. The annual lists then follow Cafer Sadık to Semsekeyn in 1895/96, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür), and Bayans in 1896/97, then back to Damascus from 1897 to 1899. Next came Beirut (Beyrut) from 1899 to 1904. The last posts were in Suhyun in 1905/06 and Suriye in 1906/07.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to a peak of 750 in 1895/96, as 2. Müdür in Semsekeyn, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 675 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
