Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1847/48 (AH 1264) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Rıza Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 21, in 1869/70, Ahmet Rıza began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 110 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1872/73 to 1882/83 places Ahmet Rıza in the same post, postal official (Posta Memuru), in Kanlıca.
Pay rose from 110 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to a peak of 150 in 1877/78, as Posta Memuru in Kanlıca, when 2 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 12 years the salaries add up to 18,840 kuruş, 24 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1882/83.
