Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1847/48 (AH 1264), Ahmet Nazif Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Ahmet Nazif also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Work began in Al Diwaniyah (Divaniye) in 1863/64, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 480 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1867/68, places Ahmet Nazif in Şarköy as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1870/71. Next came Yozgat and Istanbul from 1871 to 1875, with a rise to a post in the documents office (Evrak Kalemi) in 1874/75, then Çeşme from 1875 to 1884. The annual lists then follow Ahmet Nazif to Chios in 1884/85, then back to Çeşme from 1885 to 1898. The last post was in Çine in 1898/99.
The salary went from 480 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to 950 in 1875/76, the peak, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in Çeşme, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 800 kuruş. Over 33 years the salaries add up to 234,540 kuruş, 1.1 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1898/99.
