Life#
Abdulhamit Efendi was born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1847/48 (AH 1264) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Baghdad in 1866/67, at about 18, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1867/68, places Abdulhamit in Baghdad, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Abdulhamit to four places in 12 years, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1871/72, then back to Hillah from 1880 to 1883. Next came Gharyan (Garyan), Nalut and Al Luhayyah (Luhayye) from 1884 to 1891, then Al-Salt (Salt) from 1897 to 1903. The last posts were in Nalut again from 1904 to 1906. The posts lie on three continents, Africa, Asia and Europe, as for fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service. The farthest post, Nalut, lay about 3,100 km from Baghdad, and fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to a peak of 1,200 in 1884/85, as 2. Müdür in Gharyan, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
