Life#
Born in Damascus (Şam) in 1864/65 (AH 1281), Ahmet Şükrü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Şükrü also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Damascus in 1885/86, at about 21, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 750 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Ahmet Şükrü in Yemen as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Heraklion (Kandiye) and Al-Salt (Salt) from 1893 to 1900. The last posts were in As-Suwayda (Süveyda) from 1900 to 1904. Yemen, about 2,150 km from Damascus, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 750 kuruş a month in 1891/92, as Muhabere Memuru in Yemen, when three in four paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 500 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
