Life#
Yusuf Ziya Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1864/65 (AH 1281) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a colonel (miralay). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Bahri siyah in 1878/79, at about 15, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1891/92, with Yusuf Ziya as a candidate official (Mülazım) in Hamidiye, where the entries run to 1898/99. The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1900 to 1906.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1891/92, as Mülazım in Hamidiye, when 16 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 14 years pay ended below where it began, 250 kuruş against 300. In all, 14 years of salary come to 46,800 kuruş, 56 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
