Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290), Şerafeddin Murad Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Şerafeddin Murad had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 15, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From 1889/90 to 1906/07 every annual entry places Şerafeddin Murad in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), from 1892/93 as a registry clerk (Mukayyit) and from 1894/95 as Tetkik Memuru.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 305 in 1904/05, as Tetkik Memuru in Istanbul, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 18 years of salary come to 38,340 kuruş, 36 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
