Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Süreyya Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Mehmet Süreyya had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1889/90, Mehmet Süreyya began work in Istanbul, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 30 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1889/90, with Mehmet Süreyya in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1892/93. Mehmet Süreyya then moved to Amasya from 1894 to 1900, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru), then Tokat, Çorum and İpsala from 1900 to 1905, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1904/05. The last posts were in Feres (Ferecik) from 1905 to 1907.
Pay rose from 30 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 500 in 1904/05, as 3. Müdür in İpsala, when 52 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 17 years the salaries add up to 67,440 kuruş, 67 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
