Life#
Born in Sivas in 1873/74 (AH 1290), Mehmet Ahi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Sivas in 1894/95, at about 21, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1896/97, places Mehmet Ahi in Amasya as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1900/01. The last posts were in Sivas, the birthplace, from 1901 to 1903.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 400 in 1902/03, as Muhabere Memuru in Sivas, when one in three paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 24,360 kuruş, 57 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
