Life#
Born in Omurtag (Osmanpazarı) in 1873/74 (AH 1290), Hafiz Salih Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Ayvacık in 1891/92, at about 18, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Salih as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Bitola (Manastır). Salih then moved to Bozcaada, Kerpe and Ezine from 1899 to 1905. The last post was in Ioannina (Yanya) in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 400 in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Ioannina, when 38 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, nine years of salary come to 30,000 kuruş, 56 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
