Life#
Born in Pazardzhik (Tatarpazarcığı) in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Said Efendi was the child of a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in 1890/91, at about 22. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Mehmet Said in the Agnam Kalemi in Keşan. Next came Gelibolu, Balıkesir and Bozcaada from 1896 to 1902, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1900/01. The last post was in Bozcada in 1902/03.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 750 kuruş a month in 1894/95, in the Agnam Kalemi in Keşan, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 300 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
