Life#
Mustafa Nazmi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Nazmi also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Isparta in 1889/90, at about 21, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places Mustafa Nazmi in Kadınhanı as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Mustafa Nazmi then moved to Raqqa in 1896/97, as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür), then Antalya from 1897 to 1904. The last posts were in Edirne in 1904/05 and Muğla in 1905/06.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 500 in 1896/97, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Raqqa, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
