Life#
Ahmet Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1867/68 (AH 1284), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Afyonkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Sahib) in 1893/94, at about 26, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Ahmet as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Lüleburgaz. Ahmet then moved to Alexandroupoli in 1895/96, then Çorlu from 1896 to 1901. The lists have no entry for 1901 to 1903. The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1903 to 1906.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 380 in 1895/96, as Muhabere Memuru in Alexandroupoli, when 26 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over ten years pay ended below where it began, 220 kuruş against 300. In all, ten years of salary come to 37,680 kuruş, 64 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
