Life#
Born in Oryahovo (Rahova) in 1867/68 (AH 1284), Hasan Hilmi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a sheikh (şeyh). Hasan Hilmi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1881/82, Hasan Hilmi began work in Karadeniz Ereğli, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places Hasan Hilmi in Trabzon as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Samsun from 1895 to 1904, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1903/04 as a postal official (Posta Memuru).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 380 kuruş a month in 1894/95, as Muhabere Memuru in Trabzon, when 26 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over ten years pay ended where it began, at 380 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
