Life#
This official was born in Istanbul in 1877/78 (AH 1294) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (katip). Work began in Istanbul in 1889/90, at about 13, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places the official in Trabzon as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1897/98. The last posts were in Yemen and Haydarpaşa from 1898 to 1904 and Aleppo (Halep) in 1904/05, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1898/99. The farthest post, Yemen, lay about 3,200 km from Istanbul, and fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 1,500 in 1899/1900, the peak, as Posta Memuru in Yemen, when 94 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
