Life#
Born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1877/78 (AH 1294) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Abdi Nazım Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). At about 16, in 1892/93, Abdi Nazım began work in Shkodër (İşkodra), with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places Abdi Nazım in Jeddah (Cidde) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1897/98. The annual lists then follow Abdi Nazım to Tarsus, Kosova and Bihcova from 1899 to 1905. The last post was in Thessaloniki, the birthplace, in 1905/06. Jeddah, about 2,600 km from Thessaloniki, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 600 in 1900/01, as Muhabere Memuru in Kosova, when 67 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
