Life#
Born in Görele in 1877/78 (AH 1294) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Abdullah Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Görele in 1893/94, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 320 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places Abdullah in Trabzon as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1898/99. Next came Erzincan from 1899 to 1906. The last post was in Ankara in 1906/07.
The salary went from 370 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 400 in 1899/1900, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Erzincan, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
