Life#
Ahmet Hâdi Efendi was born in Gelibolu in 1877/78 (AH 1294) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Work began in Gelibolu in 1891/92, at about 15, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places Ahmet Hâdi in Gelibolu, the birthplace, as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1899/1900. Next came Kırklareli in 1900/01. The last posts were in Gelibolu again from 1901 to 1906, with a rise to central office official (Merkez Memuru).
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 500 in 1901/02, the peak, as Merkez Memuru in Gelibolu, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
