Life#
Born in Gelibolu in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Jewish (Musevi) community, Behor İsak Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Behor İsak had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
Work began in Çanakkale in 1900/01, at about 24, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1901/02, with Behor İsak as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru) in Istanbul. From 1902 to 1904 the annual entries place Behor İsak in Al-Faw (Fav), with a rise to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The farthest post, Al-Faw, lay about 2,250 km from Gelibolu, and fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to a peak of 800 in 1902/03, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Al-Faw, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
