Life#
Karabet Asadoryan Efendi was born in Kurucay in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi). Karabet Asadoryan knew four languages, Armenian, English, French and Turkish, all in writing, a number reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
Work began in Beyoğlu in 1901/02, at about 25, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1901/02, places Karabet Asadoryan in Beyoğlu as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1904/05. The last posts were in Aleppo (Halep) from 1905 to 1907.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to a peak of 700 in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Aleppo, when 73 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
