Life#
Mustafa Nesimi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took 14 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Mustafa Nesimi also attended the telegraph school, wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 20, in 1882/83, Mustafa Nesimi began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with Mustafa Nesimi in the Fen Kalemi in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1894/95. Mustafa Nesimi then moved to Beyoğlu from 1895 to 1909, with a rise to assistant director (Müdür Muavini) and to director (Müdür) in 1906/07. The last post was in Istanbul again in 1909/10.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 3,250 in 1907/08, as Müdür in Beyoğlu, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 28 years of salary come to 465,900 kuruş, 2.9 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The last annual entry is for 1909/10.
