Life#
Born in Beypazarı in 1863/64 (AH 1280) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Celalettin Fikri Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Mehmet Celalettin Fikri also attended the telegraph school, wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1882/83, at about 19, paid from the start, on 350 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1882/83, places Mehmet Celalettin Fikri in Istanbul as Mektebi Sultani Muallimi. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Celalettin Fikri to Beyoğlu from 1883 to 1888, then Mektebi sultani from 1889 to 1900. The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1901 to 1906, first as a postal official (Posta Memuru), from 1902/03 as an official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru) and from 1905/06 as Mevrude Basmemuru.
Pay rose from 350 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 1,000 in 1905/06, as Mevrude Basmemuru in Istanbul, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
