Life#
Artin Zeki Efendi was born in Bilecik in 1864/65 (AH 1281), into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Artin Zeki also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Artin Zeki began work in Bilecik in 1882/83, at about 18, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1882/83, places Artin Zeki in Istanbul as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Artin Zeki to Kriva Palanka (Eğri Palanka), Prizren and Skopje (Üsküp) from 1883 to 1891, with a rise to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in 1883/84. The last posts were in Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1891 to 1894.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 750 in 1888/89, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Skopje, when 73 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1893/94. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Defterlerine göre Osmanlı Devletinde görev yapan Bilecikli devlet ..." by MEHMET GEYİK (2022) probably refers to Artin Zeki, since the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree.
