Life#
Born in Ioannina (Yanya) in 1863/64 (AH 1280) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi was the child of a medrese teacher (müderris). Work began in Ioannina in 1877/78, at about 14, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1881/82, places Hüseyin Hüsnü in Bitola (Manastır) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Kriva Palanka in 1885/86 and Mezraa in 1887/88, then a return to Ioannina, the birthplace, from 1889 to 1891. The annual lists then follow Hüseyin Hüsnü to Kurveles in 1891/92 and Elazığ in 1892/93, then Kissamos (Kisamo) from 1893 to 1898. Hüseyin Hüsnü then moved to six places in seven years, from Uşak to Lezhë (Leş). The last post was in Shkodër (İşkodra) in 1905/06. In all, 14 places on two continents, a number reached by only 22 of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to 750 in 1901/02, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Štip, when four in five paid officials earned less. Over 20 years pay ended below where it began, 200 kuruş against 300; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
